The Under 14 National Tennis Team earned their place in the final qualifying round of the World Junior Tennis Championship, with a perfect timeline in Colombo. The Pre-Qualifying round of the biggest Under 14 international series was held over 5 long days of sizzling tennis at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association.

The Sri Lankan team was a fresh yet hungry outfit of three, captained and coached by National Davis Cup player Sankha Athukorala. With Chathurya Nilaweera, Nelaka Dissanayake and Wenuka Kithmula teaming up in the 2018 National Squad, performed valiantly against 3 top nations to advance to the final qualifying round before entering the main draw of the competition.

Sri Lanka was pooled into Group C along with Singapore, Malaysia and Laos. None of the three nations managed to break through the Lankan wall for a win sending Sri Lanka right to the top of the group. After topping the group, the hosts entered the main draw of 8 looking for a top two finish. Philippines, Iran and Qatar faced the wrath of Sri Lanka as Athukorala and the boys cruised through the draw to remain unbeaten and finish at the top of the group.

The Boys’ team will take center stage in Bangkok, Thailand from the 26th -31st March for the final qualifying round along with the Sri Lanka Girls team. Carrying forward impressive scores from 2017, the girls have secured a direct spot in Thailand and will join the boys later this month.
