Batting in the middle order left-handed Perera scored 44* and 47* against South Africa and India respectively at The Oval before being ruled out of the game against Pakistan after sustaining an injury during the game against India. He was later replaced by Dhananjaya De Silva.

Perera was not named in the squad for the first two ODIs against Zimbabwe and skipper Angelo Mathews said he is ‘touch & go’ for the upcoming India series as well, “Kusal Perera is out for the whole series. The physiotherapist says it’s 8 to 12 weeks if I’m not mistaken. He’s also ‘touch & go’ for the Indian series as well so we will have to closely monitor him.” Mathews said prior to the start of the Zimbabwe series.

Perera suffered a similar hamstring injury earlier this year during a practice game in Sri Lanka before the Bangladesh ODIs which ultimately ruled him out of the home series but after just more than a week, he recovered to play the T20I series.
