Kodikara Impresses at the World Powerlifting Championship

Dhanushka Kodikara, the 23 year old power lifter from Sri Lanka was placed 13th in the 93kg event at the World Powerlifting Championship 2016 held in Orland, Florida.

Petrite Kodikara along with Ransilu Jayathilake is part of the two man contingent representing Sri Lanka at the World Power Lifting Championship for the first time in the history.  Kodikara was the youngest contestant in his weight category and managed to Squat 240Kg , Bench press of 160Kg and a Dead lift of 250Kg.  Kodikara’s target was to be within the best 15 athletes in the competition and will be happy with his performance. In 2015, Kodidikara won Gold at the Junior Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship which qualified him for the World Powerlifting Championship.

Speaking to ThePapare.com about his performance he mentioned “I am glad to be amongst the best 13th lifters in the world, I managed a total of 650Kg which is my personal best so far. The exposure that I gathered participating in this meet is great and I am determined to keep improving.

Ransilu Jayathilaka,  Kodikara’s trainer and team mate on the tour had high praise for the young lad adding “he will be the future of Sri Lanka powerlifting. He’s young and he’s keep on improving.  So I’m sure this will be a great exposure for him to compete at a world championship at this age”.

Jayathilaka will be competing in the 120Kg event on the 18th of November 2016 and is determined to qualify for World Powerlifting Games 2017 in Poland.
