The Junior National Championship which was postponed to the 2nd to 5th of April has again been moved to the 23rd to the 26th April due to unavoidable circumstances.

The championship which until yesterday was to be held on the first week of April has been pushed back due to the new track laying at Sugathadasa Stadium taking longer than expected with the prevailing weather conditions hindering the progress of the construction work.

Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) has decided to move the Junior Championship to the fourth week of April considering the Sinhala and Tamil new year holidays which fall during the second and the third week of April. The competition however will coincide with the first day of the School second term which could influence the number of participants negatively.

Speaking to ThePapare.com president of AASL Major General Palitha Fernando stated that “It’s not ideal that we have to move the Junior Nationals again to a later date in April but we are left without a choice with the work at Sugathadasa taking longer than expected. We do not want to move the competition to Diyagama as we want to provide the youngsters the best possible facilities to perform at their best ”

AASL also confirmed that the Junior National Championship will be followed by the Asian games trials which will be held on the 26th and 27th April at Sugathadasa stadium and will decided the athletic squad that will represent the country at the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia.
