The much anticipated All Island School Games 2019 – Athletics Championship commenced today (30) at the Sugathadasa Stadium Colombo. The competition will be worked off till the 3rd of November 2019. Day 01 concluded with 4 new meet records. 

At the very onset of the competition the flag was hoisted and conquered by the Jaffna Province lads, as A. Puvitharan of J/Chavakachcheri Hindu College set a New Meet Record with a performance of 4.82m in the Under 20 Boys’ Pole Vault event. The previous record was also established by a student from Jaffna, K N Joyson, in the year 2016. S. Sukiketharan of J/Mahajana College and S. Kabilshan of J/Manipay Hindu College saved the slots for 2nd and 3rd place respectively. 

A.Meshak Milosh of Seventh Day Adventist High School Negombo showcased a remarkable performance of 1.75m in the Under 14 Boys’ High Jump event. Milosh successfully surpassed the previous meet record set at 1.71m, established two years ago by P M U V Thennakoon of Dharmapala College – Pannipitiya. Dewnila Wickramarachchi of Lyceum International School Wattala, stood on par with Milosh, clearing a height of 1.75m but fell to 2nd place as a result of his failed attempts at previous heights. A close fight was also given by G. Lesadu Arthavidu of D. S. Senanayaka College – Colombo 8 as he cleared a height of 1.72m to finish third.

The Asian Games qualifying youngster P. Rumesh Tharanga continued to establish his dominance, beating his own record stamped last year (2018).  The young lad of St. Peter’s College – Colombo 04 managed to outdo his previous record with a distance of 66.63m in the Under 18 Boys’ Javelin Throw. M.T.K.Pranando of St. Mary’s Boys’ Maha Vidualaya – Chilaw and A.D.D.Dilshan of C.W.W.Kannangara Maha Vidyalaya, Minuwangoda managed to secure the remaining podium spots. 

The Under 16 Girls’ Long Jump event displayed an exuberant performance with stiff competition falling just centimeters short of the previous record. W.A.Ishara Samanmalee of Wiharagala M. V. – Hambanthota and H.M.Nethmika of Nannapurawa M.V. – Medagama fought hard to take away the gold. W. A. Ishara Samanmalee managed to grab a tough win just a centimetre ahead of Nethmika with a performance of 5.52m.

H.H.R.S.Jayasundara of Srimath John Kothalawala M.V. – Kurunegala outran his fellow competitors with a breath-taking performance of 48.73 seconds in the 400m semifinal held today. His performance took out a New Meet Record and he will be looking forward to bettering the mark at the Finals to be held tomorrow (31).
