ISAC 2015 Day 02 – Lyceum Wattala stands unbeaten with 54 Medals

The second day of the International School Athletic Championships concluded with Lyceum International School –Wattala earning themselves 16 more gold medals diminishing the hopes of rest of the contenders.

Day One Recap

Out of the breathtaking moments on day one the performances that stood out were the new meet records set by sprinter Asiri Wijesekara and High Jumper, Purnima Gunaratne with impressive performances of 22.08 sec in 200m and 1.70m in the high jump to wide open the competition for day two.

Day Two 

The Lyceum International School a Wattala gave no chance to the rest of the contenders as a rain of gold medals showered upon them on day two. Earning 16 more gold medals they increased their double figure  lead and finished off with real hopes of winning the championship by leading the medal table. Their medal tally consists of 26 gold medals, 20 silver medals and 9 bronze medals which will add up to a total of 54 medals.

 

Starting the day off early with track events Lyceum Wattala etched the gold medal in 110m boys under-17 hurdles by clocking a time of 17.04 seconds while the under 19- category of the same event was also won by them after finishing off at 17.47 seconds. While they owned the short sprints the long distance sprints were also dominated when they won the gold for the 1500m under-19 boy’s event with a timing of 04:28:31 minutes.

While the lads from the outskirts of the city dictated the meet; the organizers, Gateway College Colombo managed to hold up their position of second place. With 9 gold medals, 12 silver medals and 9 bronze medals their total number of medals at the end of the second day was 30. They gained their maiden medal for the day when they won the 110m hurdles under-20 boys event clocking 21.41 seconds.

While the top two slots were sorted as such the most breathtaking performances were witnessed at the 4x100m relays at all age groups. All the participating schools giving out their all in the event added glamour  by opening the avenues of the championship wide open. Lyceum Wattala finished the under-17 boys relay with a new meet record of 44.74 seconds while the girls relay of the same age category was won by Gateway College Colombo with a timing of 55.29 seconds.

The under-19 4x100m boys relay was also dominated by the Lyceum Wattala athletes with a timing of 44.78 seconds while the girls’ event of the same age category was won by Gateway College, Kandy with a timing of 52.78 seconds. The boy’s under-20 age category of the event was won by Lyceum Nugegoda with a timing of 48.79 seconds and the girl’s event was won by Colombo International School with a clocking 10:06:31 minutes which was rather surprising.

While track events flowed smoothly, the field events were dominated equally by all the participating schools. Royal Institute won the Javelin Throw(800g) under-20 boys event with a distance of 45.69m while 700g under-17 was won by Lyceum Wattala with a distance of 49.68m.

Lyceum Nugegoda ended themselves at the third place of the medal tally with 7 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 12 bronze medals which adds up to a total of 26 medals while the fourth place went out to Lyceum Panadura with 28 medals and the fifth place to Lyceum Rathnapura with 14 medals at the end of the day.
