The 38th Sri Lanka Age Group Aquatic Championships came to a conclusion yesterday at the Ananda College Swimming pool complex, as defending champions St. Joseph’s College and Mahamaya College projecting themselves as Champions, yet again in the Schools aquatic arena.
With yesterday’s win, the Josephians would be stamping their stance in the waters, as the 9th in a row since 2003, while the mighty Mahamaya girls from the hills, would be boasting of a 13th win, in a row!
The end of final day and fourth day of the schools aquatic meet saw Josephians topping the overall points table with an aggregate 609.5 points to win the boys’ title, while Mahamaya Girls’ School, Kandy with 567 points to retain the girls’ overall title.
Josephians were followed by the lads from Reid Avenue, who had 539.5 points ahead of them while Ladies’ College, Colombo were the runners-up in the girls’ category with a total of 394 points.
The fourth and final day also saw ten new Sri Lanka schools records being established. The exceptional significance of this year’s tournament to that of others is, the tournament had set the platform for 44 new meet records, during the four-day time period. A key stand out in yesterday’s relay event was the Josephian swimmers renewing the under 19 medley relay record by 5 seconds. The team included Shashike Perera (back stroke), Praneeth Udumalagala (breast stroke), Sahan Rupesinghe (butterfly) and Shaan Dias (freestyle).
A proud Josephian camp walked away with both the Senior and Junior trophies in the Boys category. e Ladies College grabbed the Senior trophy in the Girls category, while Mahamaya Girls’ school walked away with the Junior Trophy in the same category.
