ThePapare met up with the victorious Visakha Vidyalaya water polo coach, Zafar Zainudeen to get his thoughts on the match played on Sunday. Visakha managed to win against Ladies College comprehensively scoring 5 goals as opposed to the 2 from Ladies.
When asked about the win Zafar had this to say, “The girls put up a great show and it was indeed a memorable one. They worked hard and tirelessly for this victory. The courage and determination showed by the Visakhians to bring back the lost pride was immense. And I consider my self fortunate to be a part of this great side which had no hope of winning at the beginning of the season. They have come a long way as a team and their character was tested all along the year”.
“During the match we proved we were the better side. The girls stuck to the game plan and executed it to perfection. On defense the Girls marked really tight with no room for shots and on attack the last line of defense of LC was put under a lot pressure. For me it was all about rattling the LC defense. They boast of a great defense, but I assume our attack was a bit too strong and the LC defense cracked and most importantly its ever reliable Wall collapsed. These bunch of kids from Visakha was led by Shivani who is one of the most energetic captains we have had. She controls the game very well from top and she never lets the hunger for Goals drop. She will push you to the extreme".
When asked who were the stand out performers Zafar said, “Personally I don’t think there were any stand outs from the Visakha side. It was a great team effort and every single player did their job to perfection. In attack and in defense the contribution from all players was equal. There was no player who was given more responsibility. It was shared among all and they just had to stick to their job assigned and also focus on support play. We as a team planned it well and executed our plan to perfection".
"Not taking anything away from a good game put up by the LC goal Keeper and Captain Sachini Rajanayake, She was the only stand out for me. If not for her the score lines would have been “not that great” I would say for the LC camp. Well done Raj".
"Last note to all the LC coaches just to let you all know that we were not lucky; we definitely out-classed and out-played our opponents in Style. 5-0 at interschool does not look lucky. And 5-2 at LC-VV also does not look lucky".
