Hosts ANC wins inaugural sevens tournament

 

American national College won the inaugural inter-university sevens tournament beating SLIIT ‘B’ in the cup finals 40 points to 12  at Maitland Crescent on Sunday.

There was a total of 12 team who went in to the tournament to bag the honors namely, ICBT, ACBT – A & B, APIIT, SLIIT – A & B, Sri Lanka Law College, BMS, Dimo Automobile Training School, Asian Aviation School of Ratmalana, Kotalawela Defense University – A & B and two teams from host ANC Education.

The event which was sponsored by Wild elephant saw a good crowd in cheering their respective teams. ANC who had an unbeaten run to the finals was led by Rishitha Peiris and had the services of national sevens player Shenal Dias, Ghazali Ifthikar, Vishvajith Wijesinghe, Steven Nelson, Minshin Ching, Danidu Silva, Angelo Hettiarachchi, Lakmal Egodawatte, Regan Sellar and Bashry Hilmy.

SLIIT– B and ANC Blues had an impressive run throughout the League and the 2nd round matches with ANC maintaining an unbeaten run through the tournament while SLIIT-B lost to ICBT in the group stages. However in the CUP Finals we saw some fast open rugby dished out by both teams and at the end ANC Blues won in a no quarter asked nor none given game by beating SLIIT – B 40 points to 12.

In the League games ANC Blues beat BMS 43 – 0, Asian Aviation 22 – 0, ACBT – B 22 – 0. They beat SLIIT-A 52 – 0 in the Cup Quarter Finals and Beat ICBT 33-5. That’s piling up whopping Total of 212 points against 17 in the whole tournament.

The giant national second row forward and former Junior national skipper Shenal Dias was adjudged the most spirited player of the tournament and clearly stood out from the rest of the players present.

ICBT won the Shield beating Kotalawela Defense University ‘A’ – 24 points to nil

ACBT ‘A’ won the Bowl beating APIIT 22 – 5.
