Colombo Sweep the Madras Colombo Regatta

The Colombo Rowing Club defeated the Madras Boat Club in the 74th Madras Colombo Regatta held this afternoon at the Colombo Rowing Club on the Beira Lake. The Regatta has a history dating back to 1898 and is considered the oldest boat race in Asia. The event is true testament to the bilateral relations between the two nations; Sri Lanka and India. The Regatta is now held on an annual basis with the two clubs rotating to host the event. The Madras Boat Club is based in the river Adyar in Chennai , India (formally known as Madras).

Colombo Rowing Club (CRC) won 7 out of the 8 events on offer during the evening and clinched the famed Deepam Trophy. Whilst in the Ladies segment Madras Boat Club (MBC) made clean sweep winning all 4 events.

Colombo Rowing Club who fielded a large contingent considering home conditions didn’t disappoint the spectators who had gathered at the rowing club. They won 6 men’s races in a row before the break and completely dominated their Indian counterparts.

Whilst in the women’s draw the MBC returned the favour to their hosts and won all 4 events. Incidentally the CRC women won the Ladies Overall Trophy for the first time in 2010 when the event was held in Chennai and could not hold on to it for another year.

The MBC ladies crew was strengthened by the inclusion of All- Indian Shruti Kamat, who represented India in the Asian Games in 2010 and is one of the brightest prospects for Indian rowing.

Madras did however manage to salvage some pride when they won the “B” fours. It is noteworthy to know that the MBC B crew comprised of 15/16 olds and their gritty performance left the Colombo camp dazed. The MBC consisted of Karan Rao, Sharan Sanjaya, Siddharth Sumi, Rohith Maradappa and Sanjeev Anirudh.

In the last race of the evening the Boat Race, the race that started the 113 year rivalry and friendship that spans across the Paik strait. The Colombo Rowing Club “A” Four of Chamal Jayanetti, Zydhney Fazal, Shelan De Livera, Sajin de Livera, and Kemil Peter beat MBC’s Vishal Sudhakar, Inan Diwan, Chandramouli, Siddharth Yadav, Anirudh Sanjeev with timing of 3.22. And thus clinching the Madras Colombo Challenge Trophy.

It is interesting to note that the visiting team has never won the Overall trophy during the recent past and the last time that CRC won the Deepam Trophy in India was in 2004 when Diluk Aluvihare led the team.

The Chief Guest for the evening was the High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka His Excellency Ashok K. Kantha.
