ANC Rugby 7’s this weekend

ANC Education, a predominant player in the education industry, has a student body of over 800 students and provides American, British and Australian education programmes in Sri Lanka. At ANC the students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities and the college currently has no less than nine different clubs and associations that cater to different personalities and interests.

“We allocate a considerable amount of funds, annually, for student activities because we encourage students to develop management and social / sports skills as part of the education process at ANC,” says Ms Aruni Mahipala, Additional General Manager Human Resources, Administration and Internal Marketing.

ANC views events of this nature as an opportunity to create good relationships and mutual respect between its students and students of other universities. Therefore The Sports Committee together with the Rugby Team on ANC have organized an Invitation Inter Higher Education / University Colleges Rugby 7s for the first time in their Student Activity calendar.

The ANC rugby team has become a scintillating outfit amongst the private college teams with several thrilling wins in its list of achievements. Formed just a year back the team has managed to shove its way to victory in games played against seasoned players.

The ANC rugby team was formed in July 2010 when the College received an invitation to participate in a Rugby Sevens tournament organized by ICBT, Kandy. The young lads managed to win the plate championship at the tournament. Achieving this feat with just a few days of practice, the team was encouraged to pursue the game more seriously.     They participated in the rugby sevens organized by the Western Province Rugby Football Union in August and became the plate runner up at the tournament. The ANC beat Dickoya Maskeliya Cricket Club (DMCC) 14 points (2 goals) to 12 (1 goal, 1 try) in a thrilling Rugby encounter held at the Darrawela grounds, Dickoya. On October 2, the ANC team managed to record another impressive win against the Puffins Rugby Football Club beating them 34-0.

After the impressive performance by the ANC team against the DMCC in Dickoya, the DMCC requested for a second match in Colombo. The second match was played at the Colombo University grounds on October 9. The ANC team managed to win the game 29-27. The ANC Rugby team took wings to Bangkok to participate in the Bangkok International Rugby 7’s tournament in February 2011 and they emerged Shield Champions beating more fancied international team. They Beat ‘Insead’ (French Team ) 14-12 to come to the semi Finals of the Shield and beat The gymkhana club 21-19. In the finals they beat a Japanese club 21-14 to clinch the Shield. The path to victory on the rugby field is not easy, but the ANC team is full of confidence, ready to add to its already impressive list of achievements.
