'Baseball Knockout Championship'

The All Island Baseball Knockout Championship concluded at the University of Colombo ground on 9th January with Ranabima Royal of Peradeniya crowning as champions. The event, sponsored by Abans, took place for 3 long days, starting from the 7th January.  It was a precursor to the “Club Baseball League” as the eight quarterfinalists would automatically qualify for it.

The tournament brought little good news for the university teams as University of Kelaniya and Wayamba University were knocked out by Army & Siridamma College, Galle in the first round. However the 4 university teams that made it to the 2nd round were unable to cap off a victory and make their way through to the quarterfinals, meaning that there won’t be any University representation at the upcoming “Club Baseball League”. University of Moratuwa came agonizingly close in their contest with DS Knights, losing just 2-4, while University of Peradeniya experienced a crushing defeat at the hands of the Maroons with a 0-13 score line. University of Colombo faced a similar fate against the men from Kandy as they lost 0-12. University of Sri Jayewardenepura rounded off the University contingent with their defeat at the hands of Asia 1-14.

At the quarterfinals Ranabima Royal College of Peradeniya, Maroons, Royal College of Colombo and Army teams overcame DS Knights, Kandy, Asia & Richmond College of Galle respectively to march on to the semi-finals. In two one-sided contests Ranabima Royal College overcame Maroons (5-1) while Royal College overcame Army (11-4) creating a much anticipated final. In the penultimate game of the tournament the Maroons took on the Army team defeating them 2-0 and winning the Bronze medal at their expense.

Traditional heavyweights Ranabima Royal College, Peradeniya overcame Royal College in a tensely fought out final with a score of 11-9 to lay claim to the tournament championship.
