Sri Lanka to Host Ironman 70.3 and 5i50 Triathlon Series in February

On 19th February 2012, Colombo will facilitate the first race of 70.3 Ironman series 2012 in South Asia, making history as Sri Lanka’s first ever Ironman 70.3 event. A 5i50 event is also scheduled to take place concurrently.


According to the organizers, the event will become part of the Ironman 70.3 series that includes over 40 races worldwide and the 5i50 Triathlon Series with 15 races where the participants of the Colombo event will be able to win qualifying slots for the world championships.

Other races of the 70.3 in Asia Pacific region are scheduled in Singapore, Australia, Philippines, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand, running up to the end of 2012.

What is Ironman 70.3?

Ironman 70.3, also known as a Half Ironman, is a middle-distance triathlon race organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC). The "70.3" refers to the total distance in miles covered in the race, consisting of a 1.2 mile (1.9 km) swim, a 56 mile (90 km) bike ride, and a 13.1 mile (21.1 km) run. Each distance of the swim, bike, and run segments are half the distances of those segments found in an Ironman triathlon. Ironman 70.3 was conceived in 2006 and has become the fastest growing triathlon series in the world.

What is 5i50?

i50 is made up from Olympic distances of a 1.5 km swim, 40 km bike ride, and a 10 km run.

What to expect?

Even though the event is limited only to 750 participants, it is likely become a tourist destination with the increasing popularity in sports tourism.
The 70.3 event will witness popular triathlon athletes such as Tim Berkel (AUS), Tim Reed (AUS), Fredrik Croneborg (SWED), Patrick Evoe (USA), Kristin Möller (GER) Dana Wagner (GER), Justin and Belinda Granger from Australia.
Faris Al-Sultan, the 2005 World Ironman Champion will be taking part on 19th, in 5i50 event along with the giants such as Jenny Fletcher (USA), Luke Gillmer (AUS), Paul Ambrose (AUS), Freddy Lampret (RSA), and Rachael Paxton (AUS).
