The top Golfers of Sri Lanka teed off the greens of the Royal Colombo Golf Club on the second of January 2012 for the Sri Lanka Open Golf tournament with the principal sponsorship from United Tractors & Equipment (Pvt.) Ltd. (UTE).
The tournament concluded yesterday with the Awards ceremony being hosted at the RCGC. The tournament was organized by the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) under the name UTE-CAT Sri Lanka open Golf Championship.
The titles for the UTE-CAT challenge trophy for amateurs and the Pam Fernando memorial trophy for Ladies were also contested in two inaugural tournaments run concurrently to the open championship.
42 top contestants closely contested the open championship that was spanned over the space of a week through four enthralling rounds of very high-level golf. Of these 42 competitors 3 men stood above the rest ending the tournament within 3 shots of each other. Described as the three best golfers in Sri Lanka at present Anura Rohana, K. Prabagaran and Mithun Perera displayed immense talent staying ahead of the pack all the way through the tournament.
The first round ended with Prabagaran on top with 66 shots at the end of 18 holes whilst Perera and Rohana followed close behind on 68 and 69 shots respectively. In the second round Rohana and Mithun Perera dominated making the 18 holes in 67 shots whilst Prabagaran took 70 shots to complete the course to tie with Rohana on 136 at the end of round two whilst Mithun was on 135 shots in second place.


Ara Rohana began to creep ahead in the 3rd round making the course in 71 shots whilst Prabagaran and Perera took 72 and 74 shots each to complete the 18 holes of the RCGC course ending round three with Rohana on 207, Prabagaran on 208 and Mithun on 209.
The fourth round that ended yesterday prior to the Awards ceremony saw an absolute nail biting finish when Anura Rohona completed the course in 71 shots whilst Prabagaran and Mithun Perera tied in second place just one shot behind him.
Rohana was eventually crowned the UTE-CAT Sri Lanka Open Golf Champion having finished with a Gross total on 278 shots over the four rounds. K. Prabagaran finished in second on 280 with Mithun Perera just a solitary point behind on 281 points and the end of round four.
Rohana has captured the title 6 times prior to this with this being the 4th consecutive year having won from the year 2008.
