For the second consecutive year in Sri Lanka, SpeeDrome organized the ‘SpeeDrome All Island Karting Championship 2011’. The championship comprises of two race classes – The Novices and Open event, through which two Pro Karting champions would be selected by the end of the year.

Each racing class consists of three rounds which concludes with the selection of at least 10 young drivers to be promoted to the Sri Lankan racing fraternity. They would be given the opportunity to race the 1300cc formula race McLaren’s at the Pannala race track.

The first round was concluded in June earlier this year, while the second round was held Saturday at the SpeeDrome Karting Centre, Battaramulla. The event show-cased some spectacular races and also identified emerging young talent.

Kyle Crosland was the highlight of the event where he dazzled the spectators with his remarkable Karting skills.  The ‘eleven year old’ displayed a truly breathtaking performance by winning the open event and also clinching 2nd place in the under 18 event. This was an exact replica of what he achieved in the first round in June this year.

In order to encourage young talent, there was also an under 18 event (non championship) that was organized. This event was won by Devin Serasinghe, while Tharindu Gamage was placed 1st in the Novices event. In addition, the first ever ladies championship was also carried out with R.B. De Zoysa winning the title.

Devin Serasinghe achieved the best performance for the day with a lap time of 28.20 seconds.

The third and final round is to be scheduled later this year.
