Green lights and chequered flags- that’s all you’ll see tomorrow when the Rotherham Circuit meet sets a blaze the Katukurunda race track! While it’s bound to be a spectators’ pleasure, it is marked to be the competitors’ ultimate battle field- a time to settle old scores, stage new challenges and make a name for yourself!
The big attractions will include, SLARDAR president and Mini legend Yoga Perera taking on the Group A cars upto 1050cc event against Ajith Keerthi and Mahen MAdugalle, while Upulwan Seresinghe will strive to remind all of us that the Ford/Laser Mazda events are his fortes. Other names to look for would be Ashan Silva and Pasindu Peiris in the SL-H 1600cc event as they fight for a strong podium finish. Abeeth Dangle, Dilan Seneviratne, Sedara Senarath alongside Missaka Naveen, Buddhika De Silva, and Sashika Lakmal are undoubtedly silently vouching to disturb the game plan. Brothers Jaden and Aaron Gunawardena, both of whom are below the age of 10 returns in the hope of repeating their podium success as they take on the big boys!
However the biggest crowd thrillers to be are the STD/MOD Motorcycles upto 1000 cc event and the SL-GT cars upto 3500cc event, where the cream of the racing fraternity will put on a show that is one of its kind, in the hope of lifting the coveted U. D. Jinadasa Challenge Trophy (Motorcycles) and the Air Force Trophy (Cars). Maduranga Caldera, the defending champion rider is set to impress the spectators as he defends his title with the sleek manoeuvrings of his yellow streaked Yamaha YZF - R 1 1000cc bike. But it is predicted that that Caldera is unlikely to have a smooth race as top gun Ned Daniel is set to persue the a win his own way. Word on the block is that, spectator favourite Shrian Samuel might sit this race out but we are hoping against hope that he will make an appearance to dazzle us with his racing magic- fingers crossed! On the other hand Darin Weerasinghe, our defending champion driver (recall the “ice” trick from last year?) returns to the track behind the wheel of a brand new Subaru STI 10- allegedly a first in Sri Lanka, hoping to repeat last year’s success. But nevertheless Weerasinghe will have to keep an eye on his side mirrors as Ceat- SLARDAR Championship 2011 points table front runners Passindu Peiris and Dinesh Deheragoda will not let last year’s mistakes and mishaps repeat and will be nothing short of aggressive once the race is on its way!
In short there are a lot of predictions for wins and spectacular moments to unfold, many promises of challenges and silent vows of being great tomorrow and the only way to be part of the most incredible motor sports experience is to be there! The thrills and spills of the Rotherham Circuit meet awaits you!
