Bishop’s College re-writes history!

The 7th annual hockey encounter between Ladies’ College and Bishop’s College was worked off at the police park on Friday the 1st of July. This was the first hockey match and first women’s game that was live streamed on ThePapare.com.

Ladies College going in as the favourites for the game as they have clearly dominated the tournament since its inauguration in 2005 was stunned by the Bishopians’ performance in this game.

The game was relatively slow paced in the early minutes of the match and the Bishopians’ showed dominance as they retained majority possession and kept play at the LCites’ end most of the time. During the first half Bishop’s College was awarded a total of 4 shot corners although they didn’t capitalize on them as much as they would’ve liked and failed to convert those into successful goals. This was eminent with the LCites as well as they too showed the lack of speed and accuracy in dealing with the short corners.

At half time the score remained 0-0.

Play recommenced with both teams trying to make their mark (rather than ending up as a draw like last year) and although the LC forwards managed to bring play threateningly inside the “D” area the Bishopian defense were successful I keeping them at bay.

In one such instance the ball was sent back by the BC defenders and due to some good dribbling of their midfielders it was taken past the 25 line and fed to the forwards and Thilini Herath playing at the Right-In position managed to score the first goal for Bishop’s College!

Shortly afterwards BC was awarded yet another short corner and this was the first that either team managed to score successfully. It was done in fine style! Hashanthi Madugalle receiving the ball from the line managed to stop the ball and deliver a powerful hit into the goal area which left the LC defenders and goalie absolutely astounded!

The Bishopian supporters were really ecstatic and the cheers told the tale. This was like the icing on the cake for BC as they had more or less sealed their victory.

The LCites showed a spirited performance in the dying minutes of the game as they tried very hard to come back with a goal of their own but right throughout the game Bishop’s College was just too good for them!

This can be mostly attributed to the combined efforts by the BC players as well as their coaches G.H. Jayatissa and Dinesha Perera who have invested a lot more time and energy into their practice this season.

At the final whistle the score read 2-0 in favour of the purple girls and we saw almost every Bishopian running to the centre for the celebrations!

The Under 17 match was also won by BC with a score of 3-0.
