Match facts
Date: 19th November
Venue: STC grounds Mt. Lavinia
Time: 3:00pm
And in fact, we have been entertained with quite a few of them in quick succession in the past couple of months.
S. Thomas’ having a sizeable lead with regards to the tally of this Royal Thomian Encounter, would look to increase their margin by one more victory, but the boys from Reid Avenue have so far had an exceptional season, emerging champions in the National Schools Games and the Blue and Gold Hockey Sevens Tournament, would be quite high in confidence and would look to retain the trophy for the 2nd consecutive year.
However, the nature of the rivalry between these two schools always makes any Royal – Thomian an arena where past track records and victories are nullified. And it all boils down to who wants victory more on that particular day.
The boys from S. Thomas’ College will be captained by 3rd year college coloursman, and 2nd year Sri Lanka schools coloursman Heshan Fernando, and Vice Captained by C.P. Olagasekara. The Thomians will be coached by Mr. Mulafar.
The boys from Royal College will be led by Ruwinda Mohottiarachchi together with second in command Shahid Kuthubdeen, both being 2nd year coloursmen. Royal College possesses 6 more coloursmen in their ranks; Malith Abeysundara, Shahin Ahamed, Thanweer Hallaj, Dhanuja Gunasekara, Susanga Jayawardena and Minidu Alles. The Royalist’s are coached by, Mr. Rohan Dissanayake.
The Reid Avenue team having beaten the Thomians last year with the score line reading 4 – 1, and also having 8 coloursmen in total, will have the necessary experience and confidence to bag this encounter. However, the Thomians, who will come into this game as the ‘underdogs’ will try their level best to honour the well known ‘Thomian Grit’ and grab victory away from their rivals.
Shahin Ahamed, Susanga Jayawardena and Ruwinda Mohottiarachchi will spearhead the Royal offense, while Shahid Kuthubdeen, will be the pillar of the Royal defense, along with the Goal keeper, Malith Abeysundara.
And as for the Thomians, the skipper of the side Heshan Fernando, who has tons of experience through local and international schools matches, will look to lead from the front being the only coloursman in the Thomian outfit. The rest of the Thomian team consisting of all freshers, will look to gain experience with every minute on the field, and ensuring the necessary support needed, to win this encounter.
