Trinity clinches Warden Neville De Alwis trophy

Trinity College Kandy took on S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia in their annual hockey match played for the Warden Neville De Alwis trophy at the Asgiriya Stadium today. Trinity College laid their hands on the trophy beating the visiting Thomians by 3-1.Trinity currently maintain a 03 year winning streak against their rivals STC from its inception back in 2009.

Throughout the game it was Trinity that dominated proceedings. They were mostly on the attack and the defense only gave away a goal while, the Thomians were rewarded for their brave display when Heshan Fernando's shot found the back of the net. The three goals from the Trinitians came in the first  half though the Thomians had the first crack at goal which did not find the net. The Trinitians were cutting through the visitors defense like a hot knife through butter and scored the opening goal of the game through M. Inshaaf. The Lions found some space and time to score another one within minutes though the Thomian defenders.

The home team were on the score card again when their inspirational captain M. Saleemdeen was rewarded for his outstanding performance.

The stand out player for STC in the first half was their goalkeeper who denied wave after wave of TCK attacks and saved some shots that should have been goals. At lemons the score was TCK 03- STC 00

In the second half STC was the side who took control but that could not put them in the driving seat cause of the brilliance of the Trinity defense and great goalkeeping display by M. Hanzal.

The Thomians playing eleven looked furious in attack and defense but poor discipline let them down when one of their players was sent off in the second half.

The game of Hockey has been in the highlight during the past weekend for the wrong reasons and the end of this game saw another disorderly incident. The STC goal keeper attacked the referee after the game was over. This incident tarnished a good game and the good name of the school.

The S. Thomas’ coaching team and their manager had to intervene and bought everything under control.
