An unruly act by the Matale Hockey team

 

The 39th junior national hockey tournament finals took place at the Asgiriya stadium on Sunday (13th November) where the Matale team won the crown (01-00) against the young Colombo players

There was a boisterous incident during the finals where the Matale team which eventually won the tournament took the law in to their hands and started abusing the Colombo supporters both verbally and physically during and after the game.

The sad state of affairs continued even after the game was won by the Matale team! The Colombo team which went in to wish their opponents got the shock of their life when the Matale team coach Thilak Gunasinghe, who was under the influence attacked the Colombo team players. The shameful act from the coach rubbed on his players as well as both the coach and the players ran rampant after the game was won. On the contrary the Colombo team did not retaliate and maintained their standards while being continuously harassed by the Matale camp.

“The Matale players attacked our players and supporters who came to cheer us on” said the Colombo team skipper when queried by ThePapare. “After the match we went to congratulate them and we were harassed by both the coach and the team members of the opposing camp”. ThePapare when asked whether anyone obtained injuries the Colombo skipper Minol said, “Some of our players were hurt and injured.”

Matale HA crowned champions

The Colombo team gave put in a valiant effort during the finals but could not break the defense of the more experienced Matale team. The Matale team which comprised of a few national players stood their ground to win a very commendable tournament where they inched past the Colombo team during extra time

It was a tough game for both sides in the final and it was all over for Colombo HA when MHA captains M.M. Marapana clinched the winner from a good pass and added a quality finish

Sri Lanka Schools (GOLD) vs. Defense HA

The Game for Bronze was an epic battle specially where the at full time the scores were level and the referee decide to take the game forward to a penalty shootout, Where the Sri Lanka schools (Gold) team emerged victorious.

SEMI FINALS

1st SF - Matale HA Beat Sri Lanka Schools (GOLD) 04-00 at the lemons scores were 02-00

2nd SF - Colombo HA Beat Defense HA 04-02 at the lemons scores were 01-01
