Army beat Airforce on penalties to win the Womens Club Championship

 

The Women’s Football Club Championship, ended in grand style, with a fittingly exciting game between Army SC and SL Airforce SC.

The final which was held at CR and FC grounds on the 28th of November at 3.00pm saw quite a number of spectators present to witness this event, and were rewarded with a thrilling encounter.

Both teams played some exciting football. At the 12th minute opening goal was scored by Airwoman R.S. Gunasekara who lofted the ball over an advancing SL Army SC player, where the ball finally bounced over the goal keeper and hid the netting, making the score 1-0.

Army SC with much experience came back to level in the 21st minute with a blistering long range shot by IK Liyanage, a good 25metres from the target. It was a well connected out step volley  that beat the Airforce Goalkeeper Prasadi.

At the lemons, the score read 1-1. And in the 2nd half, even though there was a lot of attacking done, both teams couldn’t find the net. And thus at full time, the scores read 1-1. And match had to be decided through a penalty shootout.

The exciting penalty shoot out ended with the scores reading 4-3 to SL Army SC. It is to be noted that SL Army SC also won the Super Six Tournament, and due to this was directly qualified to play the final.
