An uncertain Saturday to decide who takes home the “Hayman”

At the conclusion of the first leg of the 20th Annual Dr. R L Hayman water polo tournament, we saw Royal College and St. Thomas’s College teams battling it out with a grim determination.

As the heavens opened up, the under dogs, Royal College took down the reigning champions, St. Thomas’ College in a thrilling match that concluded at a score of 6-3.

The “Hayman” is broken down into two segments: the first leg and second leg. As we are now, drawn closer to the second leg, it’scrucial that both teams ready themselves for a strong fight.

With the score standing at 6 wins to 3 in favor of the Royalists, they need to either maintain this score or increase their 3 point lead and keep the Thomians out of the game. The odds seem in favor of such a scenario. Harshaka Nissanga and his team of sharp shooters are most likely to see to the Royalist increasing their edge. Royal Goalie Kanishka Heenkanda would also play a pivotal role for the team to ensure that the opponents don’t ease back into the game.

For the Thomians the tables have turned and they go into the game as underdogs.  However they just need to make 3 goals to level the tally and get on par with the Royalists. Skipper Arjuna De Alwis who made some brilliant saves in the first leg would be a key player for the Thomians.  Penetrating his strong defense proved a difficult task for the Royalists in their last meeting. If his team can up their game to shoot a few goals De Alwis can certainly change their circumstance and pull a win out of the hat for the Mt Lavinia Squad.

Both teams have stated to ThePapare that that have no intention of slacking and would give it their all to emerge Hayman champs. So Saturday’s match is promising to be an exciting encounter where either team can pull through to an astounding finish. So rain or shine, head over to the Police Swimming Pool Complex, Narahenpita at 3:30pm to witness the second leg which will prove to be anything but disappointing.
