A Three-man team leads Sri Lanka at 26th Asian Confederation Boxing Championships

Three Sri Lankan boxers: R.G.S. Kumarasinghe, R.M.T. Dakshilath and T.D.N.T. Jayakody will leave for Incheon, Korea today (August 3), to represent Sri Lanka at the 26th Asian Confederation Boxing Championships.

R.G.S. Kumarasinghe of Navy Sports Club would be fighting in the Light Welter weight category (64kg), while Dakshilath of Slimline Boxing Club would be Sri Lanka’s placement in the Fly Weight Category (52kg). Jayakody of Air Force Boxing Club would be fighting in the Bantam Weight category (54kg).

Following are the profiles of the three boxers, in brief:

R.G.Sisira Kumarasinghe:

A past pupil of Nugawela Central College who commenced his boxing career after joining the Sri Lanka Navy. A Light Welter weight boxer, Sisira won Gold Medals at the Defense Services Boxing Championships, the National Boxing Championships, the Layton Cup Meet, the Novices Meet and a Bronze Medal at the Clifford Cup Championships in 2009.

In 2010 he won a Silver Medal at the National Boxing Championships as well as a Silver Medal at the SAF Games in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

 

R.M.T. Dakshilath:

A Fly Weight Category Boxer who represented St. Alloysius College, Rathnapura, 25 year old R.M.T. Dakshilath won a bronze medal for Sri Lanka at the South Asian Junior Boxing Championships 2002 in Kathmandu, Nepal and also represented Sri Lanka at the Junior Asian Boxing Championships 2005 in Karachchi, Pakistan. The Slimline pugilist subsequently represented Sri Lanka at the Pakistan Invitational International Boxing Tournament in 2010 and the China Open Boxing Tournament 2010.

He was awarded ‘Best Boxer’ at the National Boxing Championships in 2007, won Gold at the National Games in 2008 and was awarded ‘Best Loser’ in the National Boxing Championships in 2008.

Dakshilath also secured the ‘Best Boxer’ title at the National Sports Festival and at the Clifford Cup Meet in 2009, whilst winning the Gold medal at the National Championships in 2010.

 

T.D.N.T. Jayakody:

T.D.N.T. Jayakody is a 22 year old Bantam Weight Boxer who received his education at Peradeniya Central College. In 2010, Jayakody represented the Sri Lanka Air Force, winning a Gold Medal at the Defense Service Boxing Meet and was adjudged ‘Best Boxer’ at both the National Boxing Championships as well as the Clifford Cup Boxing Meet.

Jayakody also secured a Bronze Medal at the World Military Games held in USA, last year.

The trio would be accompanied by two coaches, R.S. Kumarapperuma & W. Wasantha Kumara, Manager Aubrey Peiris and Team Doctor / Ringside Physician Dr. Daya Athukorale.

Kumarasinghe, Dakshilath and Jayakody have been training under the specialist Cuban Boxing coach, together with the national pool, at Slimline.

26th Asian Confederation Boxing Championships, organized by the Asian Boxing Confederation is to attract over 150 boxers from 24 countries. The eagerly contested tournament will commence on the 5th of August with the finals being held on the 12th of August, 2011. Participating countries such as China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan and Korea, have already nominated boxers across all 10 weight categories, for the championships.
