19 year-old Sri Lankan pugilist Amila Nuwan outgunned Pakistani Champion Haji Jehanzeb Abbas by 15-8 and settled in for a Bronze medal, in the Quarter final fight that was worked off in Laiquat Gymnasium, Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad, Pakistan.

Amila Nuwan was participating at the Second Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Memorial Boxing Tournament in the capital city of Pakistan when he took over Jehanzeb, who is also the current Pakistan Champion in the Light Fly Weight (49kg) category.

However, Amila Nuwan was not fortunate enough to make a breakthrough in the Semis as his Mongolian counterpart Ariubold Ganselem defeated Nuwan by 16-9. According to a communiqué issued by the ABA (Amateur Boxing Association) of Sri Lanka, Amila Nuwan had sustained a shoulder injury and had failed to continue his winning spree.

Ganselem, had had made the young Lankan’s injury into an opportunity and entered his name into the Final fight in the Light Fly Weight. Ganselem would take on Peter Mungai of Kenya in the final match.

In the Fly Weight under 52kg category, M.G.C.V. Bandara of Sri Lanka Army emerged victorious in the preliminary round one, but lost against Pakistan National Champion.

Meanwhile, in the preliminary bouts worked off at the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Memorial Boxing Tournament R. M. A. B. Gunathilake beat Slovenian opponent but lost to the Philippine Champion in the Quarter finals, in Light Weight class (60kg) category.

N.M. Hettiarachchi, representing Sri Lanka in the Welter Weight under 69 kg category, was successful in the preliminary round one, but was beaten by the Kenyan Champion Boxer at the Quarter finals.

In another Quarter-final bought in 91kg category, Mohamed Ghossoun (Syria) knocked out Nuwan Sujeewa (Sri Lanka).
