According to the President of AIBA, C. K. Wu, the short skirts would be given as an option to the participants in the womens boxing’s debut London Olympics.
Speaking at the 5th World Conference on Women and Sport in Los Angeles on Saturday (18), Wu remarked that AIBA has never made the skirt compulsory! This statement came in response to the criticisms made by Benita Fitzgerald-Mosley (the 1984 Olympic 100m Hurdles Champion and the Chief of Sport Performance at USA Track and Field at present) who had earlier stated that “women would be forced to wear skirts!”
He vehemently denied that the boxing authoritative body had taken such a step to ‘force’ the female boxers to wear short skirts. “We observed and understood that some women want to wear shorts and some want to wear skirts. After some rounds of discussions, our Technical and Rules Commission led us towards making what they wear optional”. He also revealed that many boxers are yet undecided on ‘what to wear’.
The ‘skirt for female boxers’ has been a strong discussion and has been raising concerns witihn sport’s authoritative bodies, across the world. The skirt had first drawn attention when the Polish team wore skirts in European Women's Championships held last year. Boxers have raised mixed feedback on wearing skirts, on both the positive and negative aspects.
However, ThePapare.com reliably learns that the AIBA is yet to make a official announcement, following a formal ratification made by the AIBA Executive Committee.
