Western Province tops the medal tally in a record-breaking NSF

The 37th National Sports Festival (NSF) concluded last Saturday (10) at Mahinda Rajapakse ground, Diyagama. This year's event carried much significance as many athletes set new records in their events and some advancing upon the previous records, set all by themselves.

However, as it has been the case during the past years, this year too, the Western Province team walked away with the President’s trophy with 81 gold medals at the 37th NSF. 52 silver and 45 bronze medals were also collected by the Western Province team at the event with 252 points in total.

The runner-up position was acquired by North Western Province, which gathered 27 gold medals, 31 silver and 34 bronze medals with 151 points. North Western Province was followed by Central Province which carried 39 gold medals, 38 silver and 46 bronze medals with 147 points.

Chaminda and Shanika set new records in 1500m events

Chaminda Wijekoon, Sri Lanka’s celebrated middle distance athlete who represented Uva Province clocked 3 minutes 44.16 seconds (3:44.16) in the 1500 men's event, advancing upon his previous record of 3 minutes 46.77 seconds (3:46.77) which was set five years ago.

At the same day, yet another middle distance athlete named Shanika Samanmalee, representing North Western Province clocked 4 minutes 25.06 seconds (4:25.06) in the 1500 meters, women's event. Shanika, with her new record renewed the previous record set by N. M. C. Dilrukshi from the same province at 4 minutes 29.08 seconds (4:29.08).

Apart from the above, the 4x400 metres women’s team of Wayamba province set a new games record as they clocked 3 minutes 45.21 seconds.


Best athletes: Manjula and Chandrika

High Jumper Manjula Kumara of Southern Province and short distance sprinter Chandrika Subhashini Rasnayake from Wayamba Province were declared the Best Athletes, at this year’s National sports festival.

Manjula Kumara, also set a new record as he marked a height of 2.20 metres on the 8th, while improving his previous record height of 2.18 metres he had jumped last year.

Fastest athletes: Shehan and Jani

Western Province’s Shehan Abeypitiya, along with Jani Chathurangi De Silva of Wayamba Province were adjudged the fastest man and woman at the 37th National Sports Festival.

Both Shehan and Jani are athletes who hold proficiencies by taking part in international events. Shehan clocked 10.63 seconds while Jani clocked 12.31 seconds in their respective 100 metres events.
