The second day of the 37th National Sports Festival saw Nadeeka Lakmali and N. G, Jayathilake setting new records in their respective events, and Kaushalya Perera equaling her previously set record.
Nadeeka Lakmali, the Sri Lankan and National Sports festival record holder in Women’s Javelin throw threw a distance of 57.11 metres, and renewed her previous record of 52.34 metres set three years ago.
Nadeeka’s new record will be the second such record set by an athlete representing the Southern Province at the 37th National Sports Festival, currently being held in Mahinda Rajapakse stadium, Diyagama.
Nadeeka, who holds the Sri Lanka record of 58.48 metres, represents Sri Lanka Army. She’s an old girl of Elpitiya Ananda College. The above record would be the second new record set by an athlete being trained by Mr. A. J. Rodrigo. Yesterday, Sajith Maduranga, who’s also being trained under Mr. Rodrigo, managed to set a new record in Men’s javelin event, by throwing a distance of 73.47 metres.
Meanwhile, Western Province’s Kaushalya Perera managed to equal her own record in women’s pole vault event today. She reached the height of 3.20 metres she had recently cleared out, participating at the national athletic championship held last month.
In other events, N. G. Jayathilake set a new meet record in women’s 400 metres hurdles, clocking 1:01:45 seconds. V. A. Kusumawathi of Central Province had held the previous record in the event at 1:01.82 seconds.
