In a hard fought battle between two of the most dominant teams in the Club Rugby scene, Navy SC emerged victorious at the Clifford Cup semi-finals.
Navy opened their account in the 7th minute by putting through a penalty while 10 minutes later they managed to score their first try for the game, touching down on the far left corner, to give them an early lead. The successful conversion made the score 10-0.
Havies looked less organised than the sailors in the opening minutes of the game and was also responsible for some costly mistakes near their try line. At one point the referee called play back (as a result of a knock on by the Havies players) after they had taken the ball more than ten yards and even touched down for a try.
The Half Time score remained at 10-00 in favour of Navy.
The Navy scrum half was given a yellow card almost within the first 5 minutes after the restart of play as a result of an infringement.
A few minutes later, Anurudda Wilwara made a run-through the Navy defence to score a lovely try after receiving a good pass from the Havies center. The scoreboard read 10-5 at this point.
In reply Dev Anand made a remarkable drop goal from a difficult angle, giving Navy an added 3 points.
The Havelocks supporters were triumphant as their second try was scored in the 30th minute of the second half through Scrum half Roshan Rajapakse, who managed to score a relatively easy try after a making a good run. The conversion brought the score to just one point behind the Sailors.
13-12 was the score and the game seemed to be quite a close one till the dying minutes of the game.
Young Willie who is not known for committing many mistakes made a kick from behind the Navy try line in an attempt to drive play away from the danger zone as Havies was having a tough time defending the Navy attack who was putting a lot of pressure on them. However Namal Rajapakse managed to block it down and score right under the post, securing hopes of victory for Navy SC.
The successful conversion moved the score to 20-12 and the 80minutes for the match was up, when Dev Anand who showed great prowess in the kicking department put the cherry on the cake by scoring his second drop goal much to the cheers of the Navy supporters as this ended the match in fine style!
Navy SC qualify for the Finals of the Clifford Cup with a score of 23-12.
