Chevron Lubricants who are synonymous with local rugby stepped up to sponsor the oldest club rugby tournament in the country for the 12th successive year yesterday at a press briefing held at the Sri Lanka rugby football union headquarters in Colombo.
Starting the sponsorship back in 1999, Caltex has been driving club rugby through the years spending as much as 400 million for its development and expansion.
Addressing the media briefing the CEO and managing director of Chevron Lubricants stated that they are pleased with the progress of the tournament and are happy to lend their hand to the improvement of the sport.
The tournament which will take shape this week will see it taking place for the 100th year this year after being awarded the ‘Clifford cup trophy’ back in 1911 from the then governor’s (Sir Hugh Clifford) wife Lady Clifford on her birth day.
Speaking regarding the un-crowned champions Kandy SC saga, the club tournament director Jehan Canageratne stated that they are currently in the process of coming out with their final decision and have kept the team concerned (Kandy SC) also aware of the situation.
The unofficial league champs will host CH&FC up in Nittewela (Kandy) in the opening match today (1st September) while Havelock’s will go against Army in another contest at the Royal College sports complex. The remaining matches between Navy and Police will be played on the 3rd of September at the Royal Complex while the match of the week, CR&FC vs. Air Force SC will be played on the same venue on Sunday 4th September.
