35 man pool selected for Junior Asiad

The freshly appointed selection committee headed by former national player Chandrashan Perera has named a squad of 35 players for the junior rugby Asiad which will commence on the 23rd of June.

The selecting panel which comprises of Hisham Abdeen, Pradeep Basnayake, Nazeem Mohomed and Baratha Hagoda were present at the All star rugby encounter which was held today at the CR&FC grounds where the Colombo Blues emerged champions by a convincing margin. Though the final pool of players have been named for the junior national team the captain of the side is yet to be announced. The SLRFU will conduct the final trials on the 19th to select the final squad who will take wing to Hong Kong for the Rugby Asiad. The players who were selected for the final trials will be training tomorrow at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Out of the 35 man squad, the majority of players have been drafted in from Trinity College. They will field 10 players from their camp while Isipathana will field 6 players. Both St. Anthony’s and St. Peters have 4 players in the squad while Kingswood and St. Josephs have 3 players each in the pool. For Royal 2 players have been selected while a player each from Science College, Wesley College, Thurstan College and Vidyartha College have been selected.

The manager for the under 19 side is Tuan Dole. The head coach of the junior national team will be Ellis Meachen and he will be assisted by C. P Abeygunawardene.
