Sharks, Kings still favourites

The glamorous Carlton super sevens tournament will hold its second leg tomorrow at the Royal College sports complex at 12.40pm.

Southern Sharks were crowned as the undisputed champions of the first edition where they edged out the much fancied Central Kings in the final game. The two finalists were unbeaten till the end of the tournament but the Sharks had the advantage having the more experienced campaigners in their team to take their team forward.

Edwin Cocker from the Southern Sharks has been their play maker together with the heavily armed Nalu Tuigamala. The two foreign players played a pivotal role in the tournament and will look to keep their consistency going in to the second leg. Having two of the most experienced local players in the form of Amjad Buksh and Dilip Selvam has given the Sharks an added advantage going in to the contest. The two sevens specialists have shown a great deal of leadership and have taken the Sharks to calmer waters. For the Kings, the ever present Zar Lawrence and Bejamin Botica have jelled well together with the local master Fazil Marija to form a lethal combination.

Uva Vipers were impressive during the first day but lacked the finesse when it came down to scoring tries. Vipers have a battery of talented players in their ranks and have a master in Amasio Valence who could turn the tables at any given time. The Eastern Eagles could not come to grip with some of the bigger teams in the tournament during the first day  but came out with a splendid performance during the second day to end 4th in the final standing. Jaffna Challengers had a very disappointing outing during the first leg and will try to bring their ‘A’ game tomorrow.

The Northern Gladiators and the North Central Typhoons had a disaster of a tournament ending their campaign at 9th and 10th place respectively.

With the tournament approaching its second leg it will be interesting to see whether the Sharks would be able to retain the trophy or whether a new champion will be crowned at the Royal Complex. Stay tuned to www.thepapare.com for more updates during the sevens tournament.
