Southern Sharks takes first leg of the Carlton super 7’s

The Southern Sharks led by Havelock’s SC veteran and former National player Amjad Buksh won the first leg of the Carlton super sevens tournament today at the Bogambara Stadium beating the Kings 19-14.

It was a fitting final with the two unbeaten teams facing off with each other. The Central Kings and the Southern Sharks were the stand out performers during the tournament and they came out with a splendid game dishing out some breathtaking rugby. Southern Sharks skipper Buksh was the first to get on the scoreboard for the Sharks. Srinath Sooriyabandara putting a neat grubber kick for his skipper to run on to gave the opening for  their win. Nalu Tuigamala obliged with the conversion and the Sharks led the game 7-0.

The Trinity winger and national youth player Sashan Mohomed was on the scoring sheet then for the Sharks when he finished off a good move on the right corner. It was always going to be a battle between the two stand out performers Nalu  Tuigamala and Zar Lawrence and the former won the battle slightly on physicality. Both teams went in fighting in to half time with the score on 14 nil in favour of the Sharks.

The second half started off with another try for the Sharks and this time it was through the Sri Lankan development squad skipper Dinusha Chathuranga. It was a good passage of play for the Sharks which saw the nippy back cross over the try line. Sashan Mohomed from the Sharks was then sent to the bin from the referee Rankothge for an infringement in the ruck and the Sharks were reduced to 6 players.

Then started the resurgence from the Central Kings headed by their skipper Fazil Farija, Zar Lawrence and Benjamin Botica. The three play makers took the game to the Sharks which ended in Kodogoda scoring in the corner. The conversion was sent through and the Kings looked like coming back in to contention to take the title. There were some tensed moments during the final stages of the game which went the Kings way with Benjamin Botica scoring a crucial try to take the score up to 19-14.

After some nervous moments the Southern Sharks held on to take the first leg by 5 points beating the Central Kings 19-14.
