Stand out players –Carlton 7’s day one

The 1st day of the Carlton super sevens tournament took off today at the Bogambara Stadium amidst a packed crowd where the Northern Gladiators and the Central Kings (theoretically the home team), came out as the top runners in their respective groups.

There were a number of high profile players who took part in an action packed tournament which dazzled the crowd at the Stadium. Well known sevens players from the world sevens circuit came together to add some flavour to the competition. Not only did the foreigners stand out but the local boys too displayed a lot of skill to keep up with the expatriate giants.

There were a number of good performers during the first day and ThePapare looks at some of the stand out’s of the competition.

Sajith Saranga (Uva Vipers)- The towering sevens specialist made sure he took the game to his opponents as he used his big frame to bulldoze some of the players. The national sevens player proved to be a vital cog in the Viper’s team where his power, pace and stamina proved to be a deciding factor for his teams wins.

Fazil Marija (Central Kings)- The Central Kings skipper Marija, was his usual self with the oval shaped ball making his customary darting runs through the middle. The Nippy Kandy SC fly half showed the foreigners that he too can step up to the plate. Marija teamed up with his foreign stars Zar Lawrence and Benjamin Botica to create a lethal three-quarters combination.

Zar Lawrence (Central Kings) – The New Zealand All Black, Lawrence made heavy inroads in to the Sri Lankan rugby arena today where he showcased some amazing talent and ability. The big made Kiwi stood tall against some of the opposing foreign players and came out trumps.

Nalu Tuigamala (Southern Sharks) – Tuigamala was by far the most impressive foreign player of the tournament today. The New Zealander was literary unstoppable at times where he took on the defense and made gaps for his teammates to run on to. The powerful three-quarter stood out with his explosive rugby and was strong when going in to contact.

Gaunavou Eroni (North Western Blacks) – The Fijian pocket rocket went about his usual way taking on many defenders during his first appearance in the Carlton super sevens tournament. He was the stand out performer for the Blacks today with some entertaining Fijian brand of rugby.

Lavanga Perera (Northern Gladiators) – The Sri Lanka youth player and Kandy SC center three-quarter Lavanga Perera, the elder brother of the Perera twins had a scorcher of a tournament today with some splendid runs. The Kingswoodian displayed a lot of temperament and class as he shoved off many defenders to score.
