Yoshitha Rajapakse appointed national skipper for A5N

Current national sevens skipper and Navy SC captain Yoshitha Rajapakse has been appointed to lead the national team for the upcoming Asian five nations tournament in April.

Rajapakse was chosen by the national selectors led by former Sri Lankan wing three quarter Chandrishan Perera and was approved by the Honourable Minister of sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage today. Rajapakse was selected from an initial group of 60 players. He led the Tuskers last year during the Borneo sevens tournament in September where under his leadership they managed to win the bowl category.

The third row forward has been a driving force in the emerging Navy SC team as well as the Jaffna Challengers which participated in the Carlton super sevens tournament last year. The selectors would have had a strong list of contenders vying for the spot of captaincy as players in the calibre of Fazil Marija, Pradeep Liyanage and  former Asian five nations skipper Sean Wijesinghe showing  tremendous leadership skills when leading their respective clubs.

The tournament is scheduled to be played from the 14th to the 22nd of April and the team is currently undergoing training under Sanath Martis and will be taken over by the new entrant to the national coaching list England’s star international, Phil Greening who is said to take over from the 1st of March.
