Royal College

Chirath Karunanayake – 26 Points- A Scull/A Double Scull/Boat Race

Jehan Samarasekara- 22 Points – B Scull/A Double Scull/Boat Race

Sahan Warnasuriya- 20 Points-  A Pair/ B Double Scull/ B Four

Sanjiva Jayasuriya- 20 Points- A Pair/ Boat Race

Chirath Karunanayake (5th year Coloursman) will be leading from the front as captain and also responsible for the most points on the Royal side, he will be taking on the A sculls events for the first time having won last year’s B scull. He has had a mixed season on the scull, but has been quite consistent in the doubles scull event, having won the U19 event at the Nationals held a month back. Chirath will also be the bow on the Boat Race.

Jehan Samarasekara (2nd Year Coloursman) will be rowing his first single sculls race at the Royal Thomian as the B Sculls. Jehan is no stranger to the sculls having teamed by with Chirath for the past three years on the Double sculls. The Jehan/Chirath combination is also the reigning under 19 national champs winning in 2010 and 2011. Jehan will once again be on the number three seat of the Boat Race Fours.

Sahan Warnasuriya (2nd Year Coloursman) will be teaming up with Sanjiva Jayasuriya for the A Pairs and would be looking to make a repeat of last year’s win in the B Pairs. Further Sahan will be paired up with Dulaj Rajaguru, a fresher, in the B D/Sculls. Sahan is also part of the Royal “B” Fours.

Sanjiva Jayasuriya (1st Year Coloursman) the stroke of the A Pair where he together with Sahan won the Gold in the Nationals u19 pairs earlier this year, Sanjiva is also the only new face in an otherwise unchanged Royal Boat race fours.

S.Thomas’ College

Chamal Jayanetti- 26 Points- A Scull/A Pair/Boat Race

Zydhney Fazal- 22 Points- B Scull/A Pair/ Boat Race

Shelan De Livera- 20 Points- A Double Scull/ Boat Race

Sajin De Livera - 20 Points- A Double Scull/ Boat Race

Chamal Jayanetti (1st Year Coloursman)  will be a fresher to the sculls event, and a lot will be riding on his shoulders has he’s responsible for 26 points,  and will also be taking on the A Pair event with Zydhney and has been showing progress over the last few months including making it to the finals of the National’s open pairs. He will also be the bow of the Boat race for the second year running.

Zhydney Fazal (1st Year Coloursman) will be the Thomian B sculler, and also pairing up with Chamal for the A Pair. He is the new face in the otherwise unchanged Boat Race crew which won last year.

Shelan De Livera (1st Year Coloursman) and Sajin De Livera (1st Year Coloursman) will be doubling up to take on the A double sculls event, having been together for nearly a year, it’ll be interesting to see how they take on the experienced opponents from Reid Avenue. Sajin will be Stroking the Boat Race for the Second Year, and was also one of the youngest Strokes to win it last year at the age of 15. They have been having a consistent streak in the fours event, winning Madras Colombo A four has one of the youngest crews, and also coming second in the Open fours event last month by a whisker.

Trivia

S. Thomas’ has won 7 of the last 10 Boat Races and hold the record at 3mins 02secs set in 2009.

Royal College is currently on a 7 year winning streak on the “B” Fours having initiated the streak way back in 2003.

S. Thomas have been dominating the A sculls having won it 8 times during the last 9 years. This period includes the winning streaks of both Isuru Perera (2002- 2004) and Sajeev De Silva (2008 -2010).

Both teams have newly acquired “International class” coxed fours and if favourable weather persists it is expected that both teams will achieve a ‘sub-3 minute’ timing in the Boat race.

Much will be expected from both crews as they battle it out this Saturday at the waters of the Beire Lake.
