The 8th Annual Ladies – Museaus Regatta (more fondly known as the LC MC Regatta) will take place on Friday afternoon at the Colombo Rowing Club. This year’s regatta will see both teams entering on a level playing field with both teams in with a chance to win the overall ‘Mary Museaus Higgins Trophy’, also up for grabs is the Boat Race Challenge Trophy.

Subashini Kularatne leads the girls from Rosmead Place, with Vinuri Wickrasekara being her deputy. They are under the guidance of Mr. Chevantha ‘Chevy’ Sirimanne, who took over the coaching reigns earlier this year. The MC Crew fared quite well this year but had a disappointing nationals last month coming second best to their bitter rivals. Museaus has a great asset in former captain Swarnamalie Wijesinghe who has been at the forefront of women’s rowing in recent years.
This year Ladies College are lead by the experienced Sarani Jayawardena and supported by her deputies Amaya Jayasuriya and Yanithra Hallock. Mr. Udesh “Hetti” Hettiaratchchi will be guiding them this year as well. Ladies College has had an impressive year so far including a dominating performance at the 27th Sri Lankan Nationals held last month where they won the under 16, under 19 and open catagories.
The regatta will see 8 races rowed across the afternoon with two sculls, two double sculls, two coxless pairs and 2 coxed fours including the Boat Race. Additionally there will be two exhibition races; the C fours and the Old girl’s four.
Brief History
Ladies College with the leadership of Radhika Wikramanayake won the inaugural regatta back in 2004 by a record 40 points to nil, but Uvini Atapattu’s Musaeus got sweet revenge the following year winning 26-14 thereby laying their hands firmly on the trophy.
With the tally equalled, the year 2006 saw Ladies College with the captaincy of Shadeena Mendis coming from behind to win the prestigious boat race which helped them to a 20-20 tie against Musaeus led by Sachithra Jayathilake at that regatta.
2007 and 2008 both saw Ladies College dominating their opponents with convincing wins over their counterparts under the captaincies of Minuri Amarasuriya and Varunika Samarasinghe respectively.
While in 2009, Ladies College under Amayi Mandawela managed to pip ahead of Musaeus College lead by Swarnamali Wijesinghe to win the regatta 22-18 despite losing the prestigious Boat Race.
In 2010, Museaus College under the leadership of Chalani Ramanayake absolutely dominated proceedings against Dulanjalie Mandawela’s Ladies College team and won the regatta 38-02.
So regatta the tally so far stands at 4 victories for LC, 2 victories for MC and a solitary tie.
