The 27th Sri Lanka Rowing Nationals concluded this evening with Sri Lanka Air Force and Ladies College been declared national champions in men’s and women’s category respectively. SLAF won 2 gold and 1 silver, 3 bronze in the men’s open category while Ladies won 3 gold in the open category.
Sporting legend, Muttiah Muralitharan, was the chief guest for the evening.

Men’s
Under 16- S.Thomas’ break hoo-doo
S Thomas’ College won the overall category by winning 3 Golds in the Scull, Pair and double sculls event. Ramith Nanayakara (STC) claimed two gold’s in the singles and double sculls event. Royal College won the coxed fours event beating S.Thomas’ and Asian Internationl and Royal College ‘B’ crew.
S Thomas’ last won the under 16 category in 2004 with Royal College winning the category for 6 years from 2005 to 2010.
Under 19- Ananda outshine Royal!
Ananda College capped off a superb 2011 by claiming the under 19 category for the first time in their history by winning 2 gold and 2 silver. Ananda had 1-2 finishes in both the singles and the fours. Ananda four comprising of Ashan Pitiyarachchi, Manilka Gunaratne, Nilusha De Alwis, Tharkana Kulatunge, Ravin Karunarathne.
Suvin Karunarathne (AC) won three gold’s claiming the U19 single sculls, U19 Fours and the Schoolboy Sculls events.
Over 19- Air force reign Supreme
SL Air Force successfully defended their over 19 overall category while SL Navy and University of Moratuwa too put on a good show.
Open - Air Force Soar High
In the highly prized open category SL Air Force pipped the Colombo Rowing Club to the overall title.
In the single sculls, Sajeev De Silva (CRC) won his third straight open sculls gold with RKK Chandrakumara (SLAF) and Shehan Mutugala (CRC) coming in at second and third respectively.
Pairs – SL Air force “A” beat SL Navy and SL AF “B”. While in the double sculls Sajeev De Silva and Shehan Mutugala (CRC) won the gold beating SL Navy and SL AF.
In the blue ribbon event, the open coxless fours, SL Air Force won by a whisker beating defending champs S.Thomas’ in what was the most closely fought race. The umpires needed to review the video footage to declare the eventual winner. Sl Navy and UMoratuwa were the other two boats in the race.

Womens
Under 16 -
Ladies College claimed 3 gold to win the under 16 category while CRC won one gold medal. Museaus College and Bishops College tied for third place after winning 2 silver and 1 bronze each.
Under 19
Ladies College won the 3 gold medals to win the overall category with CRC and BC coming in at 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Ishika de Silva of AIS won the schoolgirl sculls beating Amani Tissera and Samaakhya Gajanayake.
Over 19 – Army enter the big league
SL Army taking part in their second nationals won the overall title winning the gold in the double sculls and the coxed fours. UMoratuwa and Kothalawala Defense University too did well in this category.
Open – Ladies Outshine
Ladies College won 3 gold medals to win the overall championship.
14 year old Samaakhya Gajanayake won the open single sculls creating history as the youngest national champion. She also won the under 16 single sculls.
Ladies College claimed the double sculls with Amaya Jayasuriya and Shiyanka De Zilva winning in style beating Museuas and Bishops College. With Yanithra Hallock and Amani Tissera (LC) wining the coxless pairs.
The coxed fours was a Ladies – Museaus affair with Sarani Jayawardena, Yanithtra Hallock, Amani Tissera, Shiyanka De Zyvla, Amaya Jayasuriya (LC) coming on top.
The 8th annual Ladies’ College vs. Museaus College regatta, more fondly known as LCMC will be in 3 weeks. Will Ladies College keep the winning streak or will Museaus make a valiant come back?
