27th Rowing Nationals this week at Bolgoda

The Sri Lanka Rowing Nationals will begin Friday morning on the waters of the Bolgoda lake. There will be over 330 oarsmen and oarswomen representing 17 teams. The finals will take place on Saturday. Mobitel will be continuing their role as the patron of Sri Lankan rowing with a generous sponsorship.

Mr. Rohan Fernando speaking at a press briefing pointed out that by moving to a 2000m course, which is the international racing standard, it will help Sri Lanka in their bid to become a regular at international regattas. He further stated that Sri Lanka will be sending two oarsmen to the Asian Games which is to take place in Ghoanzou,China later this year. The two oarsmen that have been selected are Thomian Sajeev De Silva and Guyan Jayaratne (Air Force).

He also reiterated that the Amateur Rowing Association(ARASL) will do its best to secure a wildcard entry for the London 2012 Olympic Games and by having the nationals on the 2000m course Sri Lankan oarsmen would have the opportunity to achieve their best timing.

The nationals will be divided into 4 main categories for both men and women namely; under 16, under 19, over 19, and Senior Open. The junior category (under 16 and under 19) will see the largest participation with schools teams making the bulk of the 17 institutions. But it would be the Open category that will see the best competition with most teams vying for the NATIONAL CHAMPION honour.

Schools taking part; Royal College, S. Thomas’ College, Ananda College, Asian International School, St Josephs, Prince of Wales, Ladies College, Musueas College, Bishop’s College. Further the Universities; Colombo, Moratuwa, Kotalawa Defence, Colombo Rowing Club, Navy, Air Force, Army and Bolgoda Lake Rowing Club will be taking part in the over 19 category.
