Sajeev and Shehan win at ARAE Regatta

The Colombo Rowing Club bagged two titles at the annual Amateur Rowing Association of the East (ARAE) regatta held today at the Lake Club, Kolkata India. Sajeev De Silva and Shehan Muthugala represented the Colombo Rowing Club at this regional rowing event. The annual ARAE regatta, as the event is more commonly known, brings together a number of clubs from the Asian region such as the Calcutta, Madras, Karachi, Singapore, Hong Kong and Manila to name a few.

Ace Sculler Sajeev won both the single sculls (Macklin Sculls Trophy) and the Double Sculls (Phadnis Salva Trophy) with partner Shehan Muthugala. Incidentally 20-year old Sajeev was the defending champion in both events when he won both events at last year’s regatta held at the Bolgoda Lake, Sri Lanka. Chamal Jayanetti and Ashan Pitiarchchi (CRC) finished third in the Double Sculls event as well.

The Colombo Rowing Club finished 3rd in the overall men’s tally with 18 points while the Madras Boat Club (23) secured second place with host club, the Lake Club- Kolkata, winning the Hooghly Challenge Cup with 26 points.

The Colombo Rowing Club could not match up to their previous year’s performance at the Bolgoda Lake where they won six out of the eight trophies on offer including the prestigious Willingdon fours for the men’s coxed fours.

Apart from the Colombo Rowing Club, the Bolgoda Lake Rowing Club (BLRC) also participated in the Regatta with the double scull duo of Swarnamalie Wijesinghe and Sachithra Jayathilake coming second in the women’s double sculls event. While BLRC captain Lushantha Welikala won the Single Sculls in the Master’s event (FEARA)

The Women’s category was won by the Indian powerhouse, Madras Boat Club, with The Rowing Center (Tamil Nadu) and The Lake Club coming in second and third respectively.
