The Royal College Tennis team defeated the Thomians in style at their Annual Royal Thomian Tennis encounter which was played at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association hard courts last Saturday. The encounter began with the under 13 age group. The juniors of both schools displayed some splendid tennis and die hard attitude to win at all cost.
With 2 matches each both teams went into the deciding match with a lot of anxiety. As expected, the deciding match was a tight one where both the Royalists and Thomians fought head to head till the final point of the match. At tie breaker(6 all) S. Thomas leading 6-3 with the match point in hand went down to the Royalists 7/6(14-12). It was the same in the Under 15 category but the deciding match was won with ease by the Royalists. Both Under 13 and 15 were won 3-2(matches).
The day concluded with the Royal team winning the Under 19 category 3-0(Matches). The first singles was won by emerging talent Royalist Sharmal Dissanayaka, the second doubles was won Inzam Irfan and Danushka Abeywardena and the second singles was played between Royal Captain Shakir Mohamed and Avishka Perera which was won by Shakir wrapping up the encounter in favour of the Royalists.
All age groups were played a best of 5 matches. This is one of the finest encounters witnessed so far where the Thomians were a real threat to Royalists at all age groups regardless of their 3-0 loss in the Under 19 category. With this the Royal end their run on a high note; first to begin with Public Schools title, second the National Schools Games title and finally the Royal Thomian Tennis encounter.
