Royal to dominate for the 7th year, Thomian Grit yet to prevail.

Royal College Colombo has had amazing run throughout the year at all their Royal Thomian Encounters starting from the Mustang’s Trophy till the Hayman 1st Leg. This Saturday along with the Hayman 2nd leg, will be played the Royal Thomian Tennis Encounter.

Royal and S. Thomas share great sporting histories and tennis has been a part of it.  Both schools will be clashing for the prestigious E.F.C. Pereira Challenge Trophy .The Trophy was donated by Mr D.L. Seneviratne (Old Royalist and former President of the SLTA) in memory of Mr. E.F.C. Pereira who was a teacher at Royal College for 20 years and thereafter a teacher at St Thomas for a further 18 years. He was the teacher in charge of Tennis at both schools.

Royal have won the past 6 encounters and the Thomians are yet to win one. This year’s the well experienced Royal under 19 team will be captained by Davis Cup poolist Shaakir Mohamed, the team consists of experienced players like Sharmal Dissanayake and Inzam Irfan who will anchor the side. This year they won the All Island Public Schools tournament and National Schools tournament; achieving this feat has become a mundane thing for the Royalists who are prsently coached by Rajkumar. The Thomian side will be captained by Jonathan Edward and supported closely by seniors Avishka Perera and Venuka Hulangamuwa. The Thomian side is known for surprising the Royalists at the past encounters, last year they won the under 13 Age group, which is a good example. This year they have a chance of repeating the same. Thomians are coached by Sylvester Francis one the most experienced senior coaches in the country.

This will be the 7th time both schools will be clashing for the E.F.C. Pereira Challenge Trophy. Last year unfortunately it was not held due to the bad weather. This year too Royal are perceived as favorites like they were in the past encounters. The encounter consists of 3 age groups Under 13, 15 and 19. Under 19 will be the age group that decides the winner of the encounter. Each age group will be played as a best of 5 matches consisting of 3 singles and 2 doubles. The decisive factor of this encounter’s outcome from will all depend on how the Thomians challenge the tough Royal side. Thepapare is proud to announce that they are the official web partner of this Royal Thomian Encounter too and are looking forward to giving you updates during the course of the encounter.  Looking forward to see all past and present Royalists, Thomians and all tennis lovers at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association on 29th Oct(Sat) at 10am to witness this event.
