Shamil and Mihiliya shine at KL Junior International Squash Championships

Shamil Wakeel and Mihiliya Methsarani went on to grab a 4th and a 3rd place at the 5th Milo Prince KL Junior International Open Squash Championships held in Malaysia from the 14th to the 18th December 2011.

These upcoming buds who performed really well at the Asian Junior Squash Championships, Indian Junior Open Squash Championships and several other Junior events ended the year in a high note yet again proving their mettle and their thirst for victory.

Shamil who received a bye in the first round had straight easy wins over Malaysian opponents Teh Joo Eve and Siow Xee Qian in the second and third rounds respectively .In the quarter finals he had to give a decent fight to take the match in a four sets against Malaysian Eegene Heng. However Shamil was a bit unlucky to loose in the semi final to Hong Kong player Mattew Lai Chuek Nam in a tight five setter after giving a desperate hard fight. After losing the first two sets 11/211/4 Shamil showed his true grit taking the third and fourth 11/6 and 11/9,and went on to tally the set scores. But his efforts were just not enough to book himself a place in the finals as he lost the final set 11/8 after giving a good fight. However Shamil lost the play off for the third place unexpectedly to Malaysian Jesse Foo and was placed fourth in the Boys U-13 age group.

Mihiliya too received a bye in the first round and moved forward in to the quarter finals beating Malaysian Tan Jean in straight sets with the scores on 11/1,11/1,11/1.In the Quarter finals Mihiliya had the better of Mayuri N from India in straight sets and won the match 11/4,11/3,11/2.In the semi final Mihiliya met the top seed from India, Harshit Kaur and had to battle out against the best of the best in order to qualify for the finals.

Though Mihiliya had a shaky start losing the first set, she went to win the next two sets. But she too was a bit unlucky to lose the last two sets 12/10,14/12 after putting up a brilliant display and could not reserve a slot in the finals losing the semi final

11/6,10/12,5/11,12/10,14/12.In the play off for the 3rd place Mihliya beat bottom seed Sogol Samoodi form Iran in another hard fought 5 setter with the scores reading 8/11,13/11,11/9,5/11,11/5 and went on to grab the third place in the girls u-15 age group.

Both Mihiliya and Shamil were adjudged as the most improved and upcoming players at the Sri Lanka Junior National Squash Championships held in September 2011.Shamil is currently ranked no 1 in the Boys U-15 age group and no 2 in the Boys U-17 age group in Sri Lanka while Mihiliya has won a U-19 Championship and a Runners up position in the Womens Open category already.

The Papare wishes Shamil and Mihiliya the best of luck in his future endeavors and hope to see them dominate the International Squash Arena and keep the Lion Flag flying high.
