Saman and Sharya emerge Champs at the Janashakthi Open Squash Championship

Saman Thilakarathne and Sharya Guruge had their hard work paid off when they went on to take the Mens and Womens Open titles at the 9th Janashakthi Open Squash Championships. The tournament was worked off at Tamil Union Squash Courts from the 11th to the 20th of November and saw more than 300 players taking part.

France based Veteran Squash Player Saman Thilakaratne had a nightmare in the semi finals when he was dragged on to a five setter by Dilshan Gunawardena. The former National Champion never expected  Dilshan to put up that kind of a performance as Dilshan kept on playing perfect winner shots with most of them being deadly nicks. At one stage Dilshan was leading 2 sets to 1 and up 10-5 in the 4th set with just one point to finish things off. But Saman was not to be deprived from the final and broke 5 match points to take the set and tally the set scores 2-2.Thereafter Saman was not to be stopped and took the final set and the match making it a match to be remembered for the rest of his lifetime.

Meanwhile Eranga Alwis who beat Yasir Issadeen in the other semi final took on Saman Thilakaratne in the Final. Saman did not take much time to score his points and was leading 6-1 in no time. But Eranga caught up gradually and went on to level the scores at 8 all. From there onwards the match was moving either side and finally Eranga had the game in his hand with just a point needed to take the first set with the scores at 11-10.

Saman was not to be outclassed easily and a long rally took place for this point and again things were in favor of Eranga when Saman returned a hard forehand drive with a weak sidewall. But luck was not to be with Eranga as his drop shot just brushed the edge of the tin depriving Eranga from taking the game and providing Saman yet another chance. Saman made maximum use from the opportunity and took the first game 12/10 and the next two games quite easily to take the Mens Open Title.

The Womens Open final was played between top seed Sharya Guruge and bottom seed Dulakshi Elikawela and Sharya went on to win the game quite easily. Sharya started to dominate the game from the beginning itself and continued her good form throughout the match. Sharya Guruge,The former Captain of Holy Family Convent played an attacking game scoring most of her points through front court winners and went on to take the match 3/0 and with it the Womens Open Title.

Meanwhile Ravindu Laksiri beat top seed Dilshan Gunawardena to take the Boys U-19 title in a 4 setter while Mihiliya Methsarani beat Top seed Dulakshi Elikawela to clinch the Girls U-19 title in straight sets. Both Mihiliya and Ravindu went on to clinch 2 junior titles each. Mihiliya beat Fathoum Issadeen in straight sets to take the Girls U-15 title under her name while Ravindu beat Rashendra Rajapaksha to take the BoysU-17 title. Shamil Wakeel also grabbed two titles when he won both boys U-13 and U-15 titles and  he beat Senindu Induwara and Viduranga Udantha respectively in the finals.
