Former Thomian Captain and holder of three Junior National titles, Eranga Alwis moved forward into the final of the Mens Open event at the 9th Janashakthi Open National Ranking Squash Championships which is currently underway at the Tamil Union Squash Complex.
In the semi final Eranga had the better of his old school mate Yasir Issadeen with whom he had played most of his finals from the good old school days. Both the players being equally talented and anticipating for a win to qualify for the finals made the match even more competitive with both trying their best to gain the upper hand. Though Yasir scored the early points he was not able to keep the lead as Eranga caught up and ended the first set 8/11.The second and third sets too ended in the same manner with the scores reading 8/11 and 9/11 in favor of Eranga. The match which lasted for about 40 minutes saw Eranga dominating with a well controlled patient game while Yasir made too many unforced errors to give his opponent the much needed points. Eranga will be playing the winner of the next semi final which would be played between Saman Thilakeratne and Dilshan Gunawardena.
Meanwhile the Boys U-19 final was played between Ravindu Laksiri and Dilshan Gunawardena. Ravindu who beat Nadeesh Herath in straight sets in the semi final went on to repeat the same performance when he beat Dilshan in a thrilling 4 setter to take the U-19 championship. Ravindu won the match 11/3,11/13,11/5 and 11/8.The play off for the 3rd place was played between Udantha Hewage and Nadeesh Herath where the latter came out victorious after a hard fought 5 setter .
The Girls U-19 title was won by Mihiliya Methsarani and she achieved this feat when she beat Dulakshi Elikawela in straight sets in the final. This was the first time Mihiliya took part in a Girls u-19 event and still went on to take the championship at the age of 13 thus proving her class. Mihiliya also went on to take a double when she beat Fathoum Issadeen in the girls U-15 final.
Shamil Wakeel went on to take the Boys U-15 tltle with his win over Viduranga Udantha in another tough 4 setter and the scores read 11/2,11/6,9/11 and 11/8.Shamil moved into the final with a comfortable win over Senindu Induwara in the first semi final while Viduranga was made to sweat by Ruweesha Jayawardena in the other semi final where the match lasted for 5 sets.
The Boys U-11 title was won by top seed Heshan Balasuriya and in the final he beat Third seed Methmal Wood in straight sets. Metmal advanced through to the finals after beating the bottom seed I R Ashwin in a tough 5 setter while Heshan moved into the finals with an easy win over Pasan Koralage
The other finals along with the Mens and Womens Open Finals are scheduled to be worked off in the morning session on Sunday the 20th of November.
