SSC Open Badminton C'ships attract 925 shuttlers

The Annual Badminton Championships hosted by the Sinhalese Sports Club: SSC Open Badminton Championships 2011, got off with a flying start today (02) at the club’s badminton complex.

This year’s tournament, which is organized for the fourth consecutive year, has attracted 925 Sri Lankan shuttlers.

Speaking to ThePapare.com, the chief referee of the tournament Mr. Lakpriya Edirisinghe noted that the tournament was a ranking tournament which carried 25 events under its purview.

“14 Junior events, six veteran events and five open events would be worked off in this tournament. We have received around 925 entries to this year’s tournament”, he noted.

Men's Open singles and doubles, women's singles and doubles, open mixed doubles, singles and doubles for boys and girls of the under 19, 15 and 13 age groups, singles for under 11 boys and girls, women's over 35 singles and doubles, men's singles and doubles for 40 and 50 years will be worked off from today (02) until September 05.

“The tournament will also showcase top ranking shuttlers of Sri Lanka, and players all around the country, including Dinuka Karunaratne and Achini Rathnasiri would be taking part in this event” added Edirisinghe.

Meanwhile, the organizer have also arranged a prize money excess of Rs. 400,000 in addition to the trophies and certificates which are to be awarded to those who highlight themselves as prospects of the game.

The final match is to be worked off at 3.30 pm on the 5th, while the Award Ceremony would commence at 5.30 in the evening.
