Malaysian Shuttlers dominate Inter Uni Fest

The final day of the first ever Inter University Shuttler's Fest (UMISF) 2011 organised by the University of Moratuwa was concluded on Friday the 13th of May. The final matches of all the age group categories were played on this day and there were some brilliant performances both by the university players as well as the school children.

Bashani Yoshita of Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya defeated Sithara Janithanjalee of Yasodara Balika Vidyalaya to claim the under 19 girls singles title while P.K. Hettiarachchi of Dharmaraja College, Kandy defeated Damitha Yatawara of D.S. Senanayake to win the boys under 19 singles title. In the Inter University Tournament, the Malaysian shuttlers showed their prowess by dominating in almost every category and finally emerging as Champions overall. The runner up was the team of SLIIT while SAITM finished at 3rd place.

Although the tournament was a great success for the organizers the host team of Moratuwa could only finish at number four in the Men’s rankings.

The team representing the University Teknologi Mara of Malaysia was the Champions of the Women’s category as well, while SLIIT was the runner up.

The Universities of Kelaniya and Sri Jayawardenapura finished at 3rd and 4th place respectively.

The Results of the Inter University Tournament are as follows;

University Individual Event

Nuwan Hettiarachchi (SAITM) beat Nishantha Hettiarachchi by 2/1 in the Men's single category while Savini Madurasinghe (Moratuwa) beat Umalka Perera (SLIIT) by 2/1 in the Women’s single category.

The doubles team from Malaysia comprising of Halif Asro and Ahman Nasai defeated the Indians Milind and V. Anvesh by 2/1 in the Men’s category. While Prathibani Bambarandage & Gayani Perera of SLIIT managed to defeat the Malaysian duo Nurul Izzati & Nurwati Ismail by 2/1 to be the Women’s doubles champions.

Nik Ahmad Arsyad & Hidyati Yusuf from Malaysia defeated the Kelaniya double, Kanishka Madhushani & Anusha De Silva to be the winners of the Mixed Doubles category.

 

University Team event

This was the main event of the tournament where a team comprising of 8 participants would participate in different categories in order to win the tournament.

In the Men’s Category the University of Teknologi Mara clearly dominated the matches winning the final convincingly by 3/0 against SLIIT who tried their best but was unable to handle the Malaysians. The 3rd place match between the University of Moratuwa and SAITM was won by the team representing SAITM with a score of 3/1.

The Women’s finals saw a similar outcome as UiTM won against SLIIT by 3/1. The University of Kelaniya managed to finish at 3rd place by defeating the team from Sri Jayewardenepura by 3/1.
