Uni Shuttlers, ready for a full swing

As the day draws nearer to the first ever Inter University Shutters’ Festival organized by the University of Moratuwa, with the presence of both local and foreign universities, ThePapare.com takes a look at the history of the tournament and also at the participating teams.

The Badminton team of the University of Moratuwa has organized the Dr. Amith Munindradasa Challenge Trophy every year since 2007.

  • In the year 2007, this event was organized under the captaincy of Irusha Jayawardena, Indika Wijeratne and vice captains Thilina Lalitharatne and Anne Thushari Fernadopulle, as a men’s Inter University tournament.
  • In 2008, a women’s event and a National level open event were introduced and was led by the captains Thilina Lalitharatne, Madhubashini Sumanaweera, and vice captains Dinush Kodithuwakku and Thilini Liyanagama.
  • The tradition followed on in 2009 led by captains Duminda Nishad, Thilini  Liyanagama and vice captains Nishantha Hettiarachchi and Biruntha Ariyaratnam.
  • In 2010 it was organized under the leadership of Nishantha Hettiarachchi, Kasuni Liyanage and vice captains Malaka Gunasekara and Chamanthi Illeperuma.


Certain players have shown great talent and prowess at this tournament through the years and the following are those who have won the ‘Best Player’ award in the past.

2007 – Hasitha Chanaka
2008 – Nishantha Hettiarachchi and Nadun Hettiarachchi
2009 – Nishantha Hettiarachchi
2010 – Nishantha Hettiarachchi

Furthermore, Bhani Bambarandage and Ravihari De Silva have been adjudged as the Best Players in the Women’s category in the year 2009 and 2010 respectively.

University of Moratuwa (UoM)

The host team has a very talented and confident team this year led by Nadika Jayasooriya. They have managed to secure the Championship in the Men’s doubles and Mixed doubles category at Smashes 2010 (organized by the University of Sri Jayawardenapura) and also emerged runners – up at the Shuttlers event of the Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG) 2010.

Furthermore, the Moratuwa Shuttlers made their mark on Foreign soil as they were the Champions at the BITS Open Sports Meet held in Rajasthan, India last year.

They are the defending champions of the Dr. Amith Munindradasa Memorial Badminton Trophy and will look to keep their winning streak going.

University of Colombo (Uoc)

The UoC Mens team was placed 3rd at the SLUG in 2010 and 2009, while emerging runners up at INFINI 2008 held in India.

The team also participated at the 5th UiTM International Badminton Tournament in Malaysia in 2010 and 2009.

The women’s team was the quarter-finalists of the SLUG in 2010, semifinalists in 2009 and was placed 3rd in 2008.
They also participated at the 5th UiTM International Badminton Tournament in Malaysia in 2010 and 2009.

They were able to secure the fourth place in last year’s tournament.
