All Blacks take lead in Sevens Series at home

 

The New Zealand sevens kicked off yesterday at the Westpac stadium in Wellington with 16 teams going at each other looking to get ahead in the HSBC sevens series. The All Blacks and Fiji were on top of the table in the series going into the tournament and fittingly were the finalists of the cup.

The All Blacks showed intent early on dominating the 1st half of the match running in four tries through DJ Forbes, Tomasi Cama and 2 Frank Halai tries. The second half went with no score until injury time when Waisea Nayacalvu went over to score a consolation try for Fiji.

In the Third place play-off England beat Samoa 21-12 and in the plate finals South Africa overran Tonga 24-00. The Bowl Final ended with Kenya upsetting Australia 12-07 and the Shield Final ended with Scotland squeezed by the Cook Islands 19-17.

Day two kicked off with the Bowl Quarter finals where Kenya, Wales, Australia and Argentina beat Scotland, USA, Japan and the Cook Islands respectively to move into the semi finals of the Bowl whilst the losing sites fell into the Shield category.

Next came the Cup quarters where New Zealand beat France 22-07, England beat Tonga 26-07, Samoa edged passed Canada 15-12 and Fiji toppled South-Africa 21-05 lining up two fabulous semi finals in the cup category with New Zealand taking on England and South-Africa taking on Fiji.

In the Semi Finals of the Shield the Cook Islands upset Japan 17-10 and Scotland beating the USA 12-14. Kenya pulled off a thriller win over Wales 17-07 in the bowl semi finals where Australia beat Argentina 24-12. Tonga upset France 15-07 in a thrilling semi final of the plate category whilst Canada gave South Africa a good run for their money in a 19-21 loss.

The much awaited cup semis kicked off with England taking a 12-00 lead in the 1st half over the host New-Zealand who finally turned on the heat in the second half running in three unanswered tries to move into the Final 17-12. In the second Semi Final the Islanders Fiji and Samoa went hammer and tongs at each other with the Fijians running away with a 28-05 win.

Day 1 results

The All blacks as expected dominated pool ‘A’ with three wins over Samoa, Scotland and Japan with score lines of 19-07, 29-07 and 54-00 respectively. Samoa came second in the group beating Japan 29-14 and Japan 21-14 whilst the Scots got a solitary win against Japan 55-00.

Pool ‘B’ saw the number 3 ranked South-Africans take top place beating England 14-10, Cook Islands 43-00 and USA 21-00. The English finished day 1 in 2nd place with wins over Cook Islands and USA whilst the Cook Islands pulled off an upset win over USA 26-22.

Pool ‘C’ was set to be the thriller group and proved so when Tonga unexpectedly beat Fiji and Argentina 17-14 and 24-14 respectively. Tonga also drew with Wales in their first match 14 all. Fiji beat Wales and Argentina rather convincingly to take 2nd place whilst Wales picked up the one win against Argentina and a draw with Tonga.

Pool ‘D’ saw the dark horses Canada kicking off their tournament with an upset win over France 19-14 and then lost out to Australia with a tiny margin of 14-12. The Canadians went on to top the group beating Kenya in their last game of the day 21-14. France took second with a win over Kenya and a Draw with Australia who finished in third with the same points as France thanks to their win over Kenya.  France took 2nd place only because of their point’s difference of +4 whilst the Aussies had -23.
