Lions home for late lunch against Thomians

Trinity College Kandy crushed the Thomians today to win the game by an innings and 124 runs during the 2nd day of the match played at the Asgiriya Stadium.

Incidentally the Thomian first innings score of 53 runs was the lowest in the series between TCK and STC with the previous lowest score coming in 1980 when Ravi Ratnayake was at the helm of Trinity College cricket and the Thomians were bundled out for 72 runs.

Thomians continuing from their overnight score of 1 run for no loss in just one over managed to only post 137 runs in their 2nd innings. For the visitors it was senior all rounder Neomal Wickramasekera and Sanitha de Mel who scored the highest runs with both ending on 35 runs with the former remaining unbeaten.

Former skipper Chamod Pathirana managed to score a fluent 22 but his innings was short-lived due to some strict bowling by off spinner and Trinity’s deputy Janishka Premasinghe. Premasinghe who captured 4 wickets in the previous innings managed to capture a fifer this time around for 47 runs in 27.1 over’s. Lakshan Jayasinghe made short work of the Thomian tail-enders grabbing 3 wickets for 12 runs in his spell of 12 over’s.

With this emphatic win the Trinitians recorded their 9th win for the season. Trinity College last season was able to notch up 10 wins while in 2009 they achieved 8. With just a few matches to go they would look to try and break the Ananda College record of 12 outright wins which was achieved under the captaincy of Dinesh Chandimal in 2009.

Lions will take on Zahira College Colombo in Asgiriya on Monday (20th February).
