Royal College took on Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa in a tournament fixture. The match was delayed by around 2 hours due to the wet conditions prevailing from the previous day’s showers. Royal College won the toss and selected to field first.
Prince of Wales having one of the best batting sides this season, started off with much promise, as they scored 20 runs in just 3 overs. However, the Royal side broke the opening partnership through the bowling of Anupa Thilakarathne. From then onwards, wickets kept falling at regular intervals, with Tharindu Dilshan who is in top form, having scored a half century against Isipathana, was the only bright spark for POW, scoring 69 not out. This innings took which included 11 fours and a six, took Prince of Wales to a respectable total of 138 in 40 overs.
Poorna Aluthge coming back to the side after an injury took 3 wickets for 33 runs for Royal, while rest of the bowlers chipped in with a couple each. Royal having much to prove, after a few disappointing performances against Wesley and Joseph Vaz seemed to be fired up throughout the innings and in the field, with some good catches taken.
This year however, the Royal team’s biggest worry would be their batting. And once again, this worry was exposed when the start of the innings saw the score line reading 6 runs for 3 wickets, with Captain Imal Liyange being bowled for a duck. However, Freshers Isuru Gunathilake and Sarinda Malavige built a partnership to take Royal to double figures and beyond before any more damage was done. This partnership was broken due to a soft dismissal, and from then on, wickets starting falling once again. Chamika Karunarathne played a valuable knock of 30 runs, but failed to bat on. At the close of the 1st days play, Royal were 92 runs for 7 wickets, with Devin Pathmanathan and Poorna Aluthge at the crease.
Fast Bowler, Sachith Pushpakumara who took 4 wickets in the Isipathana match, continued his good form, by taking 4 more and causing most of the trouble for the Royal Batsmen.
It will be interesting to see how his story will unfold tomorrow. But right now Prince of Wales have the advantage, but cricket is a funny game.
